CARDA AND THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP)
CARDA is very fortunate to benefit from a strong partnership and mentorship program with the RCMP E Division Dog Program. The RCMP is known throughout the world for their excellent breeding and patrol dog program which includes top notch search dogs.
The RCMP maintains a small number of avalanche certified police dogs in mountainous regions of Canada. The RCMP avalanche dog handlers must be proficient backcountry skiers and hold a Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 Certification. Because of the small number of RCMP handlers certified in the avalanche profile, a network of civilian avalanche search dogs, with handlers working in the avalanche industry – CARDA - has proven to be an asset to Search and Rescue (SAR) and the RCMP in Western Canada.
The RCMP is very generous with providing instructors to work alongside CARDA at all of the training courses. They also provide RCMP dog handlers to certify CARDA dog teams annually. This prevents CARDA from ‘self certifying’ their own members.
The mentorship provided by the RCMP dog program is invaluable. Their professionalism and expertise sets a great example for the CARDA dog program.
CARDA is truly thankful for their support.
CARDA AND THE PARKS CANADA MOUNTAIN SAFETY SPECIALISTS
Parks Canada Mountain Safety Specialists are an elite and professional rescue service operating in Canada’s Mountain National Parks. Be it on a glacier, hanging from a cliff or a top one of Canada’s highest peaks, these search and rescue professionals are equipped and skilled enough to get the job done.
Parks Canada has two operational avalanche dog teams in Western Canada. These teams provide mountain skills training to both the RCMP dog program and to CARDA.
CARDA is very fortunate to benefit from the mentorship provided by such experienced rescue workers. Often Parks Canada dog handlers will instruct and examine the CARDA dog teams at their annual courses.
CARDA is truly thankful for their expertise and support.
